5 QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE APPLYING TO IIT

Engineering is one of the most preferred options after Class 12 and considered as one of the most prestigious professions in India. It is commonly observed that those students who opt for PCM stream after Class 10 generally aim to get into the renowned Indian Institute of Technology.

Every year, a million engineering aspirants appear for the IIT-JEE (Joint Entrance Examination), out of which about 10,000 qualify one of the toughest entrance examinations. However, most of the candidates who join IIT have no idea of what exactly IIT holds for them in the coming four years. They think that securing a seat in the Indian Institute of Technology is a PASSPORT TO SUCCESS.

Those candidates, who have cleared IIT-JEE, have several questions in their mind. These questions range from a selection of specific branch in IIT or what IIT holds in the next future or some are concerned about ragging. Though it is difficult to cover all the queries, but we shall address a few common queries in this article:

Candidate 1: Why would banks recruit IIT students from the branch of Mechanical Engineering?
There are many MNC banks who have started to set their base in our country. Most of them prefer IIT graduates because they have a strong base in engineering mathematics which helps them in understanding quantitative finance better than other graduates.

Candidate 2: I want to pursue sports along with the studies. As I have qualified in JEE, will there be enough opportunities for sports?
Those students who are studying in IIT are a pretty mixture of studious as well as multi-talented students. One gets an opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities of one’s choice. IITs take part in sports festivals organized by IITs as well as other institutes. There are many candidates who had excelled at State and national level while studying in IITs.

Candidate 3: I have heard that stress level at IITs is higher than at other engineering institutes. Is this true?
Whichever course you will select, there is some kind of academic pressure and it is good for you because it will drive you to work hard. When you work hard, it's possible to achieve success in your field. In case, if you feel any kind of stress, almost all the IITs have professional counsellors who help you to deal with your problems in the best possible manner.

Candidate 4: I have heard that the first year at IITs is a tough one because of ragging. What if some senior approaches us?
All IITs have a strict no-ragging policy. But sometimes a few seniors might ask you to perform on a song and there is no harm in doing it sportingly. Always treat it as an ice-breaker rather than ragging. It helps you to interact with people you met recently. It allows the new students to interact with their seniors easily and get to know each other well.
