History Behind IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi Collaborated UK, USA, and West Germany

Located in Hauz Khas, South Delhi, IIT Delhi is a public research university which has been declared as the Institute of National importance under IIT Act by the Government of India. The campus of IIT Delhi spreads across 325 acres and is surrounded by monuments like the Qutub Minar and Lotus Temple. IIT Delhi is a paradise for an engineering aspirant and is a dream for every student aspiring to become an engineer. Just like its beautiful campus, the history of this institute is one to be chewed upon.

The Establishment of IIT Delhi

The member of Education on Viceroy’s Executive Council, Shri N. M. Sircar was the one who first introduced the concept of IITs in the year of 1945. On his recommendation, in the year of 1950, the first IIT came into existence in Kharagpur. After that, he also suggested that there should be more IITs in a country. Accepting his recommendation, the Government decided to open more IITs with the help of other countries who wanted to help India in this endeavour. USSR was first to offer this help in establishing IITs and it was then that the Institutes of Technology at Kanpur, Delhi, and Madras were open with the collaborations of UK, USA, and West Germany.

Foundation of IIT Delhi

There was a negotiation between the Government of India and the British Government that they will start the institute in a very modest way. Hence, with the help of the British Government, a College of Engineering and Technology would be started at the national capital of India. With the help of The Federation of British Industries in London and the UK Government, a trust known as the Delhi Engineering College Trust was established. The foundation stone of Indian Institute of Technology was laid on 28th January 1959 at Hauz Khas in Delhi by H.R.H. Prince Philips, the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Renaming of College of Engineering and Technology

Earlier it was named as College of Engineering and Technology and it was in the year 1961, the College of Engineering & Technology was declared as an Institution of National Importance under Institute of Technology Act. In 1963, it was given the tag of ‘IIT’.For More Visit us at www.meetcareer.com
